Searches - Simplicities, Complexities

Most students…
  • Never look past the first few results
  • Use the same search engine (maybe Google?)
  • Have no idea how results are ranked
  • Are easily manipulated by results
  • The key is to use a variety of search tools and to look past the first page of results.

The Tools

Activity: File Type Search with Google Advanced Search
  • Choose a topic to research.
  • Find three Power Point presentations covering the topic, taken from sites with different top-level domains.
  • Download and compare the strengths and weaknesses of each.
  • Consider how students can consider the quality and validity of sources based on analysis of the quality of available presentations.
  • Share ideas for how this approach could be used with students in your courses.
