ADDING TEXT, LINKS & IMAGES
SETUP
1. Download and open the "THE
WHITE HOUSE.KMZ" file attached to the bottom of the Google
Earth page..
2, In Google Earth's sidebar, UNCHECK:
- MY PLACES in the PLACES section
- PRIMARY DATABASE in the LAYERS section
3. In
the PLACES section, scroll down to TEMPORARY PLACES
4. CHECK the
folder named "THE WHITE HOUSE"
5. OPEN the
"THE WHITE HOUSE" folder by clicking the triangle (Mac) or the
"+" sign (PC)
CREATING A BASIC PLACEMARK
1. Check the box to the left of:"1 The White House"
2.
OPEN DESCRIPTION BOX
- MAC: Right Click ((Control +
click) on the YELLOW PUSH PIN and select GET INFO
- PC: Right Click on the YELLOW
PUSH PIN and select PROPERTIES
- Move the YELLOW PUSH PIN so
that it is on the side walk in FRONT of the White House (Above the White
House in the Google Earth Window)

TYPE SOME TEXT
- Learn some fun facts about
the White House at:
- COPY the URL for LINK:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/white-house-101/fun-facts
- PASTE the URL after the
semi-colon in the sentence you just typed
- Hit the RETURN (ENTER) key
- TIP: This is only to make it
easier to see your html code!
- Type <P> (This is the
html code for a paragraph return!)
4. ADD
AN IMAGE
- Set your cursor in front
of the word "Learn"
- Copy and Paste the HTML
CODE FOR IMAGE
- Hit the RETURN (ENTER) key
- TIP: This is only to make it
easier to see your html code!
- Type <P> (This is the
html code for a paragraph return!)
- Replace the letters URL in
the code with the URL FOR IMAGE
5.
CHANGE THE PLACEMARK ICON
- Click the YELLOW PUSH PIN
- TIP: BUT Don't do
this >
You could
simply select one of these alternate placemarks and then click OKAY,
but don't do that!
- Click Add Custom Icon... in
the bottom left corner of the window
- In the window that appears
copy and paste the URL FOR PLACE MARK
- Click OK to close this window
- Delete all of the Text
between <!--- and xx-->
- Click OK to Close Description Box
TAKE A TEST DRIVE!
- Use the ZOOM SLIDER to Zoom out until you can
see the entire globe
- Give Google Earth a big Spin
- Double Click on the icon for this place marker
to fly to location.
- Single Click on the blue text label for this
place marker to see the contents.

ADJUSTING THE VIEW
Whether this is hands-on
or demo depends upon available time
1. UNCHECK
the box to the left of "1 The White House"
2. CHECK
the box to the left of:"2
The White House"
3. Grab
the N(orth) on the compass in the upper right corner of the screen and
carefully drag it around the compass until it is at the bottom where south
usually is on a compass.
Before letting go of the mouse button drag slightly away from the
compass.
4. In LAYERS, check the boxes labeled 3D
BUILDINGS and TERRAIN

THE CHALLENGE!
In 3 minutes, use the TILT, PAN, and ZOOM to try to change
the view to match this view as close as you can.
5. OPEN DESCRIPTION BOX
- MAC: Right Click ((Control +
click) on the YELLOW PUSH PIN and select GET INFO
- PC: Right Click on the YELLOW
PUSH PIN and select PROPERTIES

6. Click VIEW TAB
7. Click SNAPSHOT CURRENT VIEW
8. Click
OK to Close
