Integration Ideas:


  Activity A - Placemarks

    Step 1
  1. Think of a placemark you'd like to add (e.g. where you live / your school / somewhere interesting)
  2. Open Google Docs
  3. Create the text as you'd like it to appear in the placemark. If you want to include a YouTube video, just add the placeholder [YOUTUBE]
  4. Go to Edit / Edit HTML in the toolbar of Google Docs
  5. Copy all of the HTML to the clipboard - or better yet copy-and-paste it into Notepad / TextEdit
    Step 2
  1. Open Google Earth
  2. Navigate to the place to put your placemark
  3. Adjust the view / zoom level to your liking
  4. Click on the yellow pin in the icon bar (or go to Add / Placemark in the menu bar)
  5. Give the placemark a name
  6. Paste the HTML from Google Docs into the Description box - if you've got a YouTube video, replace the [YOUTUBE] part of the HTML with the embed code
  7. Change the yellow pin icon by clicking on it if you wish
  8. Right-click on your newly-created placemark in the navigation sidebar
  9. Save it as a .kmz file with the formatplacemark_place_initials (e.g. placemark_london_DB)
    

    Activity B - Layers / 3D buildings tour

    Step 1
  1. Choose whether to add a layer (e.g. live data) or a 3D building (e.g. Colosseum)
  2. If adding a layer, visit Google Gadgets, if a 3D building, the 3D Warehouse (alternatively click Add Content in Google Earth)
  3. Choose your layer or building
  4. Download your layer or building
    Step 2
  1. Open Google Earth
  2. Double-click on your downloaded layer / building to open in Google Earth
  3. Practice navigating around it - zoom in and out, tilt view, etc.
  4. Decide on the start/end point for your tour - feel free to add more layers and buildings if you wish!
  5. You may wish to add placemarks as waypoints for your tour, or you may feel confident enough to navigate manually whilst recording!
    Step 3
  1. Click on the video camera in the icon bar (or go toAdd / Tour in the menu bar)
  2. If you want to record a voiceover to your tour, click on the microphone to turn it blue
  3. Click on the record button (red spot) and navigate your layer(s) and building(s)
  4. Click the record button again to stop recording your tour
  5. Play back your recorded tour to make sure it is as you wish
  6. Click on the disk icon to save your tour - give it a name and description
  7. Right-click on your newly-created tour in the navigation sidebar
  8. Save it as a .kmz file with the formattour_description_initials (e.g. tour_hannibalsroute_DB)
