Activity: Introduction to Google Sites

1. Create a Google Site http://sites.google.com OR use our sandbox site OR use a site that you've created previously.

2. Break up into groups of 3 or 4. Create a site about "going green."

3. Add each person in the group to be owners.

4. Each person create a page about going green

5. Type content on the page, experiment with changing fonts.

6. See if you can insert the following:

7. Create a link to another website that opens in a new window.

8. Create a subpage of a page
  • Change the layout to two column. 
  • In left column type information or insert a video
  • In right column insert a Google form for student responses to the prompt
  • Bonus Hint: Google docs script to mail merge individual feedback to students

9. Manage the navigation bar to show all levels of pages.

10. Include a countdown widget in the navigation bar.

For advanced users, try at least 2 of the following activities.
1. Try using the embed gadget in the Featured category to embed a non-Google product such as a Slideshare or VoiceThread link. If you are looking for material to embed, try the following links:
2. Change the navigation to a horizontal layout under More>Manage Site>Site Layout.

  • Go to More>Manage Site>Site Layout>Colors and Fonts. Check out the great variety of fonts that are now available to you. Try to customize your Site so that it looks quite different than the basic templates and themes.
  •  Create images at COLOURLovers to use as backgrounds. Try out the Picnik Chrome app for another image editing solution.

4. Try embedding a YouTube playlist to your Google Site. Get ideas on how to do this from this blog post on embedding playlists on Blogger.
