Activity 1: Create a Google Site

There will be parts of these activities that we'll do together throughout today's session, and then there will be work time at the end of the session for you to try the remaining challenges. 

You'll need to Create a new site. We'll be adding to this throughout the session, and it's your Site to keep. You can use one of the ideas below, or you can just make a test Site to experiment with, meaning no pressure to get it right!
Part 1: Practice adding pages and content:
  • Add 2-3 pages 
  • Play with changing page layouts
  • Use headings on your pages and then try adding a subpage listing (by adding a new page, and then putting the new page "Under" another page when choosing page location)
  • Practice embedding documents, presentations, videos, and more. Check out the Insert menu.

Part 2: Insert the following:

Part 3: Taking Your Site to the Next Level:

  • Experiment with some of the new fonts that are available through the new interface.
  • Experiment with horizontal navigation within Google sites. It can provide you more real estate in the prime area of your site. Try also adding a custom banner that will give your site a better look across the top of the page. Remember the screencast shown in the slideshow!
  • Try out some of the new page level permissions that are available in Google sites. This can prove to be very beneficial on how you can setup your sites in the future.
  • Google Sites now has the option to view videos found within Google Docs. No longer will you need the option forGoogle Video, you can embed (and have them automatically converted for web viewing) straight into Google Docs and sites. 
  • Upload a video to Google Docs and then embed into Google Sites.

Activity 2: Flip Your Site

  1. Check out www.youtube.com/teachers and create yourself a YouTube Playlist that you can have students watch (or a screencast or recording of directions that you create and upload yourself). 
  2. Next, embed the video or playlist on a Google Site page. Follow this Tutorial to do that.
  3. Finally, embed a Google Form to collect evidence of understanding.
  4. Flipping with Google Sites, Forms, and YouTube-- the triumvirate of tech!

Activity 3: Student Portfolios

Check out templates of student portfolios if you're interested in your student digitally arching their 
work an reflections. If you like one, copy it for your own and you can make it available for your students!
